DONALD MARTINY, Nyx, 2024
Polymer and Pigment Mounted on Aluminum, 108” x 140”
Mariam Diehl said she is often drawn to artwork that carries a sense of movement. The new show at Diehl Gallery opening this week, “Beyond the Gesture,” is certainly a celebration of movement. Daniel Adel and Donald Martiny’s pieces are large-scale expositions in color and brushstroke, and side-by-side, the two artists are consuming in their visual cacophony.
“Both Daniel Adel and Donald Martiny are inspired by music and the work of historically impactful artists,” Diehl said. “That inspiration comes through in their work.”
The art carries evocations of color that will turn eyes wide with the massive floral-like interpretations of polymer and pigment, stretching at times more than 10 feet in green, violet and rose. Inspired by a couture color palette, bold and bright, Martiny’s “Nyx” is captivating.
Adel’s work transforms oil and acrylic into sculptures. He said of his approach in the exhibit press release that creating forms of light and shade is often the domain of the sculptor or architect rather than the painter.
“These are two internationally renowned artists making the trip to Jackson Hole, one all the way from France,” Diehl said.
Adel’s portrait of George W. Bush, which was a Time Magazine cover, is hanging in The Smithsonian. Martiny’s installations have found homes at One World Trade Center, The Crocker Art Museum, Newcomb Art Museum and The Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
Both artists will be in attendance for the opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The nonprofit beneficiary of this exhibit is the Grand Teton Music Festival.
